Ohana
by MG001 July 19th, 2009
So Momz recently got back from the great State of Hawaii. Her and Pops were there to celebrate the high school graduation of my nephew Caleb. Here is a picture of what they do to you if accomplish something great in the islands of Aloha.
Generally speaking, if this were a post college graduation pic you would not be able to see my lil’doods face. One may even need a surrogate neck too catch the overflow of Aloha. Congrats, Caleb!!

Normally I would receive gifts of tshirts whenever the ohana returns back from Hawaii. A selection from T&C Surf, Hawaiian Island Creations, In4Mation or something from the never ending selection of tourist ready and/or locals only tee’s with images of ancient hawaiian warriors, turtles, tiki’s, girls in bikini’s etc…
Hawaiian tshirt, surf, skate, street culture is probably my primary inspiration for ever making a tshirt in the first place. However, since beginning MadGods I now have waaaaaaay too many tshirts laying around. Decades worth. So these days I ask for gifts of food. Normally that would be something like Mauna Loa brand chocolate covered macadamia’s from an ABC store but you can get those on the mainland easy now. So instead this is what i find in my goodie bag.

EXHIBIT A: Hawaiian Cone Sushi

At Japanese places they call it Nari sushi and it gets very little respect. But like many things in Hawaii- (SPAM)- simple poor people food is a venerated snack if not meal. There is no fish in this. Sushi rice with bits of carrot inside a sweet tofu shell. It’s so basic and yet I have never been able to find it made as well on the mainland as you can find it at even the lamest spot in the islands.

EXHIBIT B: McDonald’s Apple Pie

I know, I know. Most of you reading this probably haven’t eaten at MickeydeezNutz in hella. I don’t blame you. But think of when you were a kid when the toys and collectible glasses were cool. Do you remember when the McWhale TM fish sandwiches were big and crispy and made of FISH? Me too. (BurgerTex’s fish sandwiches are the closest I can find these days) Well back then, the apple pies were deep fried — not baked like today— and they were DELICIOUS! Somehow, for whatever reason, the modern gospel of healthy McDonald’s pies never made it to Hawaii. Of all the 50 states and perhaps the rest of the world, the McDonald’s of Hawaii are the only ones that serve their hot apple pies as God intended. Deep fried, scalding hot and crunchy. mmmmmmmmm caution..
